HAENYEO
‘Haenyeo’, meaning ‘Sea Women’ in Korean, are the resident female free divers of Jeju Island who maketheir living from the surrounding ocean.
Today,virtually all active Haenyeo are over 50 years of age,with some over 80.
They dive10 meters or more without oxygen tanks to catch shellfish, seaweed, and othermarine life. -
BBULSORA
‘Bbulsora’ is the Korean name for a species of horned conch indigenous to the ocean surrounding Jeju Island. This conch evolved to grow horns on its shells to help stabilize themselves between the basalt rocks in the rough regional waters.
An important element to the Jeju economy, this shellfish is integral to the Haenyeo community – both as a source of income, and as a mainstay at the home dinner table. -
BULTEOK
A ‘Bulteok’ isa sheltered fire pit made with stacked basalt rocks, built on beaches where Haenyeo come to warm themselves in between and after dives.
As naturalgathering spots, Bulteokssymbolize the strong community character of the Jeju Haenyeo.

Meet at the haenyeo’s “bulteok” for a delicious underwater journey through media art
Our two-part program in Jongdal-ri consists of a play about Haenyeo life and culture performed in an intimate theater, followed by a bountiful buffet featuring seafood harvested from the local sea by working Haenyeo. We invite guests to sit around our bulteok table and enjoy a course meal reflective of a day in the life of Haenyeo. Digital video-mapping on the dining room wall displaying underwater scenery complements our storytelling and adds to the dining atmosphere.
